MARSH HALL (NEW RESIDENCE HALL) UPDATES
  • Construction Update (provided by Leif Lamoray, Leftfield Inc. Project Manager):
  • Construction remains on track for a July 15, 2010, certificate of occupancy date.
  • There are approximately 100 workers on site performing interior and exterior finishing work and exterior site work.
  • An Open House for neighbors will be scheduled for the end of August. The date will be announced at the July meeting.
  • Generator Update
  • History:
  • There was a neighborhood complaint regarding a generator that ran on Central Campus on the night of Thursday, June 3. In addressing the complaint, the college learned that Atlantic Hall (the existing residence hall on Central Campus) lost power and the backup generator that powers the building's emergency lighting and fire safety systems was activated. After the electric company restored power to Atlantic Hall, the emergency generator should have automatically shut off. However it was discovered the following morning that the automatic shut off system was broken. This has been repaired.
  • There was a second complaint regarding noise from a Central Campus generator on the night of Friday, June 11. The emergency back-up generator installed for Marsh Hall (the new residence hall on Central Campus) activated that evening. The construction manager (CM) reported that he was in contact with the manufacturer of the generator because a problem with the main circuit breaker for the building caused the generator to turn on. Corrective action has been taken, and they will monitor the generator to determine if further action is required. The the generator should only be activated in a true power outage emergency and during the function testing which will take place on Fridays at 10 a.m. for 15 minutes.
  • At the SSCNAC meeting, a neighbor reported that a piece of equipment continues to go on and off periodically generating noise. Leif Lamoray assured the group that he would work with the manufacturer and the electrical crew to correct the circuit breaker issue so that this does not occur in the future,
  • The college will provide an update on the generator situation at the July SSCNAC meeting.
HVAC SYSTEM AT BUILDING 1 UPDATE
  • The college is still waiting to receive the noise abatement equipment from the cooling tower vendor. The material must be custom made for the college’s tower, and this has caused a delay in the delivery. Contractors are on stand-by to install the equipment as soon as it arrives on campus.
LIBRARY/ LEARNING COMMONS UPDATE
  • Andy Soll presented near final design development drawings of what the facility will look like. He explained that there are two main entrances to the building and that the landscaped quad between the Library/Learning Commons and other campus buildings should draw activity inward on campus. He added that the highest point of the facility will not be above Meier Hall. The foot print will be approximately 31,000 square feet.
  • The boards presented will be posted on the college’s community connections pages, which can be accessed through www.salemstate.edu/construction. The boards will also be on display outside of the interim library on the second floor of the academic building on Central Campus
The Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) is in the process of selecting a construction manager for the demolition of the old building and construction of the new library/learning commons. They are hoping to present at the July SSCNAC meeting or the following week at a special meeting. Demolition will not begin before Labor Day.
The electrical relocation project will continue until the end of the summer.

BASEBALL FIELD
  • Councillor O’Keefe received a neighborhood complaint regarding parking and activity in neighborhood streets around the Central Campus ball field on Memorial Day weekend. Councillor O’Keefe and Executive Vice President Stanley Cahill attended games the following weekend to investigate the concern and saw no issues.
  • There have been no subsequent complaints, but the issue will remain on the agenda for comments from Councillor O’Keefe at the July meeting.
ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATES
  • The college had a community meeting on May 24 regarding environmental testing that took place at the request of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on Central Campus around Building One, the academic building that houses the Bertolon School of Business, the Music Department, Recital Hall and the interim library. Dave MacDonald of Woodard and Curran, the college’s Licensed Site Professional, was present.
  • The college is in conversation with the DEP and will alert the committee to further plans once they have been determined.
NEW BUSINESS
  • Landscape request – Neighbor David Coleman requested that the college and the city coordinate their landscape maintenance schedules along the bike path on Central Campus so that the noise is minimized to one day a week instead of two. Jason Silva said he would look into it.
  • Methadone Clinic – Jim Rose asked if the college had a position on the proposed Methadone Clinic on Canal Street. Beth Bower responded that the college is listening to all sides and has no position at this time. Marcia Lambert noted that a re-broadcast of the public meeting on this topic will be on SATV on Friday, June 25 at 6 and 9 pm.
  • Lend me a Tenor – Karen Cady announced that the first show of summer theatre is running through June 27, and tickets are available. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets available online at www.salemstate.edu/arts under summer theatre or by phone at 978.542.7555
MEETING SCHEDULE
  • The next meeting of the SSCNAC will take place on Monday, July 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the Enterprise Center Training Room B located on Central Campus at 121 Loring Avenue.
